Remix vs Mashup
I have a liking for both remixes of songs, and mashups of songs. These two forms of musical expression are similar enough to cause confusion as to which is which, so I decided to clarify, if only so that I know where *I* draw the line.
Mashup:
A mashup is a song that takes two (or more) finished works and blends them together to create a new piece.
Remix:
A remix is when a finished work is taken and changed in some way to create a similar piece without adding in another finished work.
To clarify:
In a mashup, you take one song (“Oh What a Night” – Frankie Vallie) and blend it with another song (“December 4th” – Jay-Z). What you get is something completely awesome, and surprisingly good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgMKOWqalTs
In a remix, you take one song (“S&M” – Rihanna http://tinyurl.com/4ybybmo) then you alter it, maybe adding another vocalist in addition to the original artist, maybe with a new verse for them (“S&M” – Rihanna and Britney Spears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYraZQ8rxno)
Hear (har har) are some other mashups for your listening pleasure. J
